Kelowna seniors are proving that one is never too old to learn something new.
The Society for Learning in Retirement has hundreds of members taking part in a variety of classes and seminars, learning new skills like painting and photography and improving knowledge of topics like science and technology.
Communications Director Joey Thompson said the society has grown significantly since the COVID-19 pandemic ended. "We had in the neighbourhood of 350 [members]. Since then, the last maybe two-and-a-half to three years we've gone to 875 members."
The society is open to all mature adults, regardless of their employment status.
"No homework. No pencils, books, or teacher's dirty looks," Thompson laughed. The courses are specifically for educational purposes and no tests are required.
"We have debates, dialogue trying to understand the world which doesn't get anymore logical to some of us... But we also have a very strong social element as well."
Thompson said they offer classes both in-person and through video meetings, but the majority of members come out to their site at The Martin Centre on Graham Street to socialize and make new friends.
The society also brings in various presenters and offers Saturday movie matinees.
A membership with SLR is $25 per year. Classes start at $10.
