Kelowna International Airport (YLW) will look a little different next time you walk through it.
As people wait for their turn at the airport check-in, they can look up and see 40 feet of new art on the wall, organized by the Kelowna Art Gallery.
The art is called 91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ˜Semiotically Speaking91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™ by Salmon Arm artist Steve Mennie, who is originally from Revelstoke.
The Kelowna Art Gallery describes the piece as, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœthese works highlight the artist91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s interest in signs and symbols (semiotics) and take a closer look at how we use them to communicate ideas. Have you ever stared at something that91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s very familiar for long enough that it begins to look strange? In a similar way, airport visitors will encounter examples of common road signs that, when taken out of their regular context, may cause them to scratch their heads and think, 91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœhow91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™d we ever decide that this is supposed to represent this idea?91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ
YLW will have the art on display from June 2023 to June 2024.
