BC HIghway Patrol is seeking witnesses to the collision on Dec. 7.

Police are asking for witnesses after a vehicle accident near Castlegar killed a child passenger.

On Dec. 7, shortly after 8 a.m., a snowplow and Kia SUV collided on Highway 3, just outside of Castlegar on the Paulson Summit. Road conditions were cold and icy with freezing rain.

"We are looking for dash camera video or people who may have seen the green Kia or the yellow snowplow dump truck in the moments leading up to the crash, said Corp. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. "BC Highway Patrol has already spoken to multiple witnesses, but for obvious reasons we want to make sure we investigate thoroughly."

A pedestrian also received life-altering injuries when he was hit by the Kia after it spun away from the snowplow. The 57-year-old Castlegar man had stopped to assist an unrelated vehicle that drove into the ditch.

The driver of the snowplow dump truck, a 65-year-old man from the Castlegar area, appears to be unhurt.

The boy who died was 8 and from Nelson. He was in the Kia with his five-year-old brother and their 44-year-old stepfather, who was driving. Both survivors reported minor physical injuries.

Anyone with information on the collision is asked to call the Nelson BC Highway Patrol at 250-354-5180.
