Kelowna91Ƶs new bikeep smart rack stations are popping up across the city, offering cyclists a secure parking option at key locations.

The stations aim to keep bikes safe and encourage cycling around Kelowna.

The two-year trial includes four charging stations at Parkinson Recreation Centre, Cawston Avenue (next to the Rotary Centre for the Arts), Tourism Kelowna Visitor Centre, and a planned location in Pandosy Village.

Each station features five docks for bikes or scooters, with charging capabilities available.

91ƵConcerns over bike security have risen in recent years, between increased bike theft but also the increased value of many bikes,91Ƶ says Suzanne Therrien, active transportation planner. 91ƵKnowing how and where to park at the end of the trip is an important consideration.91Ƶ

The bikeep system boasts a tamper-proof design, with metal arms securing bike frames and tires to the rack. Any attempt to steal a bicycle triggers an alarm and alerts security.

Using the free bikeep app, cyclists can access all stations. Until June 1 the city and Orchard Park sponsored stations are free to use.

After that users can lock their bikes for $1.00 for 3 hours or opt for unlimited use at $8.00 per month.

Local company E-Kruise Solutions will operate and maintain the stations deployed in the city and the Central Okanagan.

91ƵBikeep is smart bike parking that is innovative, flexible, and reliable,91Ƶ said founder Ashton Olsen. 91ƵThe locks have had 99 per cent theft reduction rate.91Ƶ

Bikeep builds on other city programs including bike valet services, indoor bike rooms and parking stations at key locations across Kelowna.
