A detached garage in Kelowna's Rutland neighbourhood erupted in flames on the evening of Friday July 19.
At approximately 8:30 p.m. the Kelowna Regional Dispatch Centre received multiple 911 calls reporting a fire in a residence in the 1000 block of Tataryn Road.
Upon arrival the crews saw smoke and flames coming from the roof of a detached garage on the property. Flames were also beginning to impact nearby structures. Flames from the blaze were visible from kilometres away by people on their apartment balconies.
Firefighters immediately knocked down the fire and contained it to the detached garage.
All occupants were able to evacuate on their own and there were no injuries to firefighters or residents.
The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
The Kelowna Fire Department responded with four engines, one rescue unit, one command unit, one ladder unit and a duty chief along with 23 fire personnel.
The BC Ambulance Service, RCMP and Fortis Gas and Electric were on scene to assist as well.
In light of the blaze, the Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind people to check their smoke alarms to ensure they are in good working condition.
