Significant lessons were learned during wildfires in the Central Okanagan in 2023, among them - emergency preparedness is vital. 

The provincial government recently introduced the Evacuee Registration and Assistance (ERA) tool to help reduce wait times for evacuees and speed up needed support such as shelter allowances during an emergency. 

Assistant Chief of Communications, Kelowna Fire Department, Jason Bedell, noted that families of five or fewer can complete the process on a smartphone.

Bedell said it's simple to create a profile in the ERA tool, adding it's important to have the BC Services Card App on your smartphone and ensure it's authorized.

Using the ERA tool through the Services Card App means you won't have to constantly re-register. If done without the App, registration only lasts for approximately 30 days. 

"The more proactive you can be now, the better prepared you will be if it (an emergency) does happen this year," Bedell pointed out.  

He is optimistic the ERA tool will make a significant difference.

Bedell suggested that residents check their insurance policies.
