With a chance of snow in the Central Okanagan this weekend, the City of Kelowna says it is ready for winter weather.

Because snow is in the forecast, city crews are out de-icing and treating roads in advance. And once the snow starts to fall, crews will be working around the clock to keep Kelowna's streets clear.

The city stated that when it comes to clearing roads, there is a priority system, meaning high-traffic streets like Gordon Drive. The second priority includes roads like Richter Street as well as roads with bus routes, school zones, town centres and emergency vehicle stations. Residential roads are the third priority.

To make snow season more manageable for everyone, the city recommends:

  • When snow falls, move your car off the street. It makes snow clearing easier, faster and more effective;
  • Clear sidewalks and walkways in and around your property within 24 hours of snow stopping;
  • Help neighbours, friends or family members who may have difficulty shovelling;
  • Use the chatbot on  or by calling 250-469-8600 to get all your snow and ice questions answered, including the latest snow clearing updates, if a temporary parking ban is in effect and when your address can expect service;
  • Know if you live on a  and abide by temporary parking bans when a Snow Event Advisory is issued.

People who live on "snow routes" must help and support clearing efforts in their neighbourhoods. When a Snow Event Advisory is announced, there will be a temporary street parking ban that goes into effect for all snow route areas, including Academy Way, Black Mountain, Clifton/Magic Estates/Wilden, Dilworth Mountain, Kirschner Mountain, McKinley Beach, Quail Ridge and areas in the South Mission.

Vehicles that remain parked on designated snow routes during these temporary parking bans are subject to a fine of up to $50 and towing.
