B.C.91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s three Green Party MLAs were sworn in Wednesday, the first formal proceedings in what will be a 41st historic session of the B.C. legislature.

Leader Andrew Weaver begins his second term as MLA for Oak Bay-Gordon Head, this time joined by Saanich North and the Islands MLA Adam Olsen and Cowichan Valley MLA Sonia Furstenau. They enter the new session holding the balance of power in a minority parliament, where they have agreed to support the 41-member NDP caucus in defeating the 43 B.C. Liberals elected on May 9.

The B.C. Liberal and NDP MLAs are to take their oath of office in similar ceremonies set for Thursday.

The legislature will then be called into session on Thursday, June 22, where a speaker will have to be elected before the B.C. Liberal government can present its Speech from the Throne, the formal statement of intent for the government.

That is expected to take a week to debate, before the opposition parties can vote against the speech and defeat the government.
