A BC Highway Patrol officer re-enacted a classic Dukes of Hazzard move after the driver's door of his police vehicle was rendered useless after being hit by a car in Salmon Arm Jan. 16.

When one door closes, the "Good Ol' Boys" of BC Highway Patrol (BCHP) go through the window.

At 2:45 p.m. on Jan. 16, the vehicle of a BCHP officer patrolling in Salmon Arm was struck by a car driving in reverse at the corner of 30 Street NE and 2 Avenue NE. Though nobody was hurt and the novice driver was cooperative and remained at the scene, the driver's door of the police vehicle was badly damaged and wouldn't open. As there was too much equipment and gear to easily get out out the passenger side, the officer took inspiration from the 1980s TV show Dukes of Hazzard to access the vehicle.

"Channelling his inner Bo and Luke Duke, the officer was able to use the driver's side window to get in and out of the police vehicle and get it back to the officer for repairs," BCHP spokesperson Cpl. Michael McLaughlin said in a media release.

The incident is under investigation. Should the Novice driver be ticketed under Motor Vehicle Act ticket McLaughlin, referencing the show's theme song, said "he will also receive an explanation of how to 'fight the system like a modern-day Robin Hood' if he cares to dispute the charge."

The BC Highway Patrol recommends drivers use their vehicle doors as intended.
