By the numbers: How the Boundary-Similkameen's election was spent

BC Conservative MLA Donegal Wilson spent half as much as Boundary-Similkameen incumbent Roly Russell in the 2024 provincial election.

Roly Russell spent more than twice what MLA Donegal Wilson did per vote they received across the Boundary-Similkameen in the 2024 provincial election.

Elections BC recently published the financial reports for candidates in the 2024 provincial election, including where those funds were directed. 

Russell, the incumbent with the BC NDP, received 10,497 votes or 42.55 per cent of the total 24,667 ballots cast. 

He spent a total of $82,337.68 on the election, which breaks down to roughly $7.84 spent for every vote he received. 

The majority of that spending, $28,062.12, was on advertising. The single largest vendor was Vancouver-based Hemlock Display, which received $5,091.14 for new signs. 

Russell spent $5,302.57 on local radio stations and print and online media advertising.

BC Conservative Wilson spent almost half what Russell did at $41,936, and received 11,937 votes or 48.39 per cent. Broken down, that equates to roughly $3.51 spent for every vote received. 

The majority of Wilson's spending, $18,724.82 was on advertising. Local spending included $577.50 for advertising with Skaha Matters, $1236.52 listed as Outlaw Signz (Outlaw Graphics in Keremeos) and $1,050 to Peak to Peak Marketing in Oliver

The majority of Wilson's spending, $12,837.44, went to Kelowna-based company Source Graphics. 

Independent Sean Taylor spent about $2.09 for each of the 779 votes he received. 

The best spending-to-vote ratio belonged to Kevin Eastwood with the BC Green Party, who spent 39.5 cents for each of the 1,454 he received.
