Keisha McCrea was sentenced to one year of house arrest Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024, after being guilty of assault causing bodily harm.

A Lumby woman who was charged following the death of a child has been sentenced to 12 months of house arrest.

Keisha Marie McCrea appeared in Vernon provincial court Thursday, Nov. 21, on a charge of failure to provide the necessities of life. While she did not plead guilty to that charge, she instead pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm, according to the BC Prosecution Service.

The court agreed on a joint sentence submitted by the Crown and the defence, imposing a 12-month conditional sentence, which includes a condition of house arrest.

The court imposed a 24-month probation order to follow the 12 months of house arrest, as well as several ancillary orders, including an order that McCrea must provide a sample of her DNA and a 10-year firearms ban. McCrea was also ordered to complete 80 hours of community service work by July 31.

The case related to the death of a child in the Lumby area in April 2020. Vernon North Okanagan RCMP officers were called to assist paramedics in the area on April 4. The child was flown to Kelowna by air ambulance that evening and pronounced deceased the next morning.

Brian William Chciuk was originally charged with failure to provide the necessities of life along with McCrea. However, on Oct. 8, 2024, the Crown stayed the charge against Chciuk.
