As of Friday, Aug. 23, the 281 hectare Mara Mountain wildfire burning near Sicamous was classified as being held.

A wildfire burning southeast of Sicamous is no longer deemed out of control.

The BC Wildfire Service (BCWS) has updated the status of the Mara Mountain fire to being held. For several weeks now the fire's size has lingered around 280 hectares, but with the change in weather conditions and other factors, further growth is currently not anticipated.

According to the BCWS, the wildfire continues to burn in an area surrounded by either alpine or burn scars from past wildfires.

"When a wildfire has previously burnt in an area, there is likely going to be less fuel available for a future wildfire to consume, effectively acting as a fire break for future fires and could aid in slowing or stopping them," explained BCWS, referring to the 2021 Two Mile Road wildfire that prompted evacuation orders and alerts between Sicamous and Swansea Point.

The Mara Mountain fire was discovered on July 18 following a thunderstorm.
