The city will be setting up a temporary bridge at McGuire Lake while the current bridge undergoes maintenance, and work is done on the creek that normally flows beneath the bridge.

City staff are working on a fix at the McGuire Lake foot bridge.

At its Dec. 9 meeting, Salmon Arm council received a letter from a senior and daily user of the walking path that goes around the lake. The writer warned of a "very dangerous walking situation" there at the bridge.

"The creek has been allowed to fill with dense grass growth, to the point the water cannot pass under the bridge but instead flows around it, creating a stream across the walking path as well as pools of water where people walk daily for much needed exercise and fresh air," reads the letter, its writer suggesting a temporary fix to allow safe passage until spring runoff.

City roads and parks manager Darin Gerow said the city is aware of the situation and said it's something that happens every three to five years.

"I believe it91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s from sediment, sand in the storm system coming down and building up and rerouting the water," Gerow informed council. "So knowing that it91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s a very environmental sensitive area through there, we are working with a qualified environmental professional (QEP).

Gerow said a temporary bridge is being constructed, giving staff an opportunity to do maintenance of the existing bridge.

"The maintenance will be happening on the existing bridge, and working with the QEP we91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™ll do some work around January, February when the ground is the best and replace the bridge in the spring," said Gerow.
