The Beach Park has been reopened to public use and the Bruhn Bridge repaired following the fatality when a transport truck plunged off into the Sicamous Channel Aug. 24.

The Sicamous Beach Park and other nearby areas on Shuswap Lake are now open to the public following a diesel spill from a transport truck that crashed off the Bruhn Bridge and into the water, last Saturday.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, about 200 litres of diesel leaked into the water from the submerged truck's fuel tanks, with additional diesel and oil, escaping during the recovery of the truck and trailer. Debris from the trailer was also spilled into the water.

On Aug. 29, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) stated that Interior Health had conducted multiple tests on and area beaches could now be reopened.

Work to replace the approximately 70-foot section of guardrail on the bridge that was destroyed in the collision has also been completed. The bridge is now open to traffic in both directions at a reduced speed of 50 km/h, though a work zone remains in effect with drivers reminded to follow the directions of traffic signs and flaggers.

The CSRD extended its thanks to motorists for their "patience and consideration during this tragic event," and acknowledged the multiple agencies and first responders who worked to ensure public safety in the hours and days that followed the collision.

"Everyone pulled together very quickly, their collaboration was wonderful, their communication was wonderful," said Sicamous Mayor Colleen Anderson.

The driver of the truck, Raminderjeet Singh, 25, was killed in the incident on Aug. 24.
