Suspicious Rutland car fire nearly takes out business

"The window of the repair shop had broken due to the heat and fire spread to the inside."

Kelowna Fire Department doused a Rutland car fire that spread into a nearby building just after midnight Sunday.

"When fire fighters arrived they found a car fully involved beside a vehicle repair shop," said Steve Wallick, Platoon Captain Kelowna Fire Department, in a press release.

"The window of the repair shop had broken due to the heat and fire spread to the inside."

Fire fighters quickly knocked down the fire outside, breached the door of the building and extinguished the fire inside.

"The car was totally destroyed. A car parked nearby sustained some minor damage as did the cinder block building. There were no injuries."

Fire department responded with 15 personnel, in three engines, one rescue truck and a command vehicle. Ambulance and RCMP also attended. Fortis was called to the scene to shut off the power to the building due to wires being compromised.

The fire is suspicious in nature. RCMP are investigating.

The Kelowna Fire Department would like to remind the public to check their smoke alarms on a regular basis. 91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵœ Working Smoke Alarms Save Lives91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ
