After beating Australia 21-12 in the Rugby 7's semi-finals at the Paris Summer Olympics on Tuesday morning (July 30),  Canadas women rugby sevens squad faced the New Zealand Black Ferns in the gold medal match.

Despite going into the second half with a 12-7 lead, the Canadians would lose 19-12 to the Kiwis. 

New Zealand Black Ferns Co-captain Risealeanna Pouri-Lane scored the first try.

The Canadians returned fire with a try of their own, with Chloe Daniels and Alysha Corrigan scoring, the latter coming just before the end of the first half. 

Michaela Blyde helped the Kiwis leave the score at the start of the second half with a score of 14-12 to the New Zealanders. 

Black Fern Stacey Waaka's break-away run up the middle of the field brought the final score to 19-12.

New Zealand secured its first medal of the games while Canada earned its second silver medal. 

The Canadians scored 21 unanswered points before the Australians could put a single point on the board in the semi-final earlier in the day.

It is the best performance by a Canadian women's rugby seven squad since the 2016 Rio Games where the team won a bronze medal.

New Zealand and Canada have already met at the 2024 Olympics, with the Kiwis winning 33-7.

The Canadian team trains in Langford and features Victoria's Caroline Crossley.
