Speciality hockey jerseys in action: Kelowna sports weekend preview

The Warriors and Chiefs are wearing speciality jerseys to reflect and honour other parts of town

It's a weekend filled with specialty jerseys in the Kelowna sports world.

Kelowna Rockets

A big weekend awaits the Kelowna Rockets as they hold onto the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Coming off of a 7-3 loss on Tuesday night (Jan. 21) to the Brandon Wheat Kings, the Rockets will look to get back in the win column on Friday night (Jan. 24) against the Kamloops Blazers.

Going into the weekend, the Rockets are eighth in the West with a record of 16-21-3-1 while Kamloops is 10th at 15-24-3-0. In two match-ups this season, both teams are 1-1 (Dec. 28 - Kamloops 3, Kelowna 1; Jan. 3 - Kelowna 6, Kamloops 4.)

Puck drop is at 7 p.m. at the Sandman Centre in Kamloops.

The following night, Kelowna returns home to Prospera Place, welcoming the 22-17-5-0 Vancouver Giants to town.

After Kelowna won their first match-up of the season 8-3 back on Nov. 22, Vancouver has won the last three games head-to-head (Dec. 29 - Vancouver 3, Kelowna 1, Jan. 4 - Vancouver 7, Kelowna 0, Jan. 11 - Vancouver 6, Kelowna 4.)

Puck drop is at 6:05 p.m. on Saturday night.

West Kelowna Warriors

For the fourth consecutive season, the West Kelowna Warriors are changing their name to the Peachland Warriors for a night to celebrate their neighbours down the highway.

As they welcome the Salmon Arm Silverbacks (19-10-6-0) to Royal LePage Place on Friday, Jan. 24, the team will be wearing specialty Peachland Warriors jerseys. And for the first time since the tradition began, the team has changed up the jerseys.

Instead of the familiar peach-coloured jerseys with black trim, the team revealed new white jerseys with the peach colour as the trim.

Going into the weekend, the Warriors are 13-15-5-2, seventh in the Interior Conference.

Friday night's puck drop is at 7 p.m.

The following night, the team remains at home as they welcome the Sherwood Park Crusaders (22-12-0-0) to town. Puck drop is also at 7 p.m.

Kelowna Chiefs

Despite a recent name change at Rutland Secondary (RSS), the Kelowna Chiefs are going back in time to honour the school's history and the town of Rutland.

When the Chiefs host the Princeton Posse on Friday, Jan. 24, they will be donning Rutland Voodoo jerseys. The team plays at Rutland Arena, which is in proximity with RSS and Rutland Middle School.

The blue jerseys with yellow and white say "Our Team, Our Town" on the back, above the number.

Additionally, the game will serve as a fundraiser for the 2025 RSS graduating class.

Puck drop on Jan. 24 is at 7 p.m.

The next night, the Chiefs welcome the Creston Valley Thunder Cats (12-19-2-0) to Rutland Arena. Puck drop is also at 7 p.m.
