UBC Okanagan athletes to represent Canada at Winter World University Games

UBC Okanagan students Liam Simons and Ella Niedre represent Team Canada at the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy from Jan. 13-23, 2025.

UBC Okanagan (UBCO) students Liam Simons and Ella Niedre have been selected to represent Team Canada at the 2025 FISU Winter World University Games in Turin, Italy.

The pair will compete in biathlon as part of Canada91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s 12-athlete delegation. They will be making their FISU Games debut and are set to compete in five biathlon events: individual races, sprint, pursuit, mass start, and mixed relay.

Simons earned a silver medal in the mixed relay and a bronze in the 10-kilometre pursuit while representing B.C. at the 2023 Canada Winter Games. He also was the top-ranked Canadian Junior Men's University athlete at the 2024 Biathlon Canada National Championships.

Niedre is a former member of Biathlon Canada91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s national development team, she achieved notable results at the 2023 Canada Winter Games, including a fourth-place finish in the 7.5-kilometre pursuit and fifth in the mixed relay for Ontario. In 2022, Niedre claimed second place at the National Biathlon Championships.

Team Canada will be led by head coach Allie Dickson, and assistant coach Sarah McCaw.
