Emergency Info BC says there is no tsunami threat to the province after a seven-magnitude earthquake off the coast of California.
The quake struck at 10:44 a.m. on Thursday (Dec. 5), west of Ferndale, a small city in coastal Humboldt County near the Oregon border, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The U.S. Tsunami Warning System initially posted a warning for the north coast of Califoria and the southern coast of Oregon.
Emergency Info BC said around 11:30 a.m. it was evaluating the available data to determine the possibility of a tsunami threat to the province, but by noon, it was determined there would be no threat.
The National Weather Service also cancelled its tsunami warning for the U.S. West Coast around noon.
At least 5.3 million people in California were under a tsunami warning after the earthquake struck, the U.S. Geological Survey said.
It was felt as far south as San Francisco, where residents felt a rolling motion for several seconds. It was followed by smaller aftershocks.
There were no immediate reports of major damage or injury.

Eureka Mayor Kim Bergel said evacuations are in place for people to move to higher ground in areas of the city under the tsunami warning and crews were assessing damage from the quake.
