eSchool23: Online Learning (Central Okanagan Public Schools - SD23)

I am honoured to address eSchool2391ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s graduating class of 2024. To the graduates who will be crossing the stage, and to many more who are celebrating at home with family, I extend my most sincere congratulations. Graduation offers us an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of our graduates and an opportunity to recognize all those people who have supported the students along the way.

It has been my privilege to be the principal of eSchool23 for several years, and as I reflect on the students we serve in our online school, I continue to be taken back by the powerful diversity that represents our graduating class. Many students come to eSchool23 for the flexible learning environment offered by online schools. Students and families have chosen to learn from home with support of online teachers for a variety of different personal and educational reasons. Some student athletes joined eSchool23 so they could keep up with their learning while they train and travel for sports. This year, that includes competitive dancers and figure skaters among others. Our graduates also include adult learners, who have chosen to return to school to earn their diploma as they pursue new career opportunities or to meet an important personal goal. In some cases, that means balancing school priorities alongside raising children and working full time jobs. And while they may not have had the opportunity to sit next to each other in class, they share something in common. They have all shown resilience, determination and a commitment to their learning that has resulted in their success today.

Graduates are leaving school at an exciting moment in time. The rise of artificial intelligence really challenges us to consider the role of schools, and how we might pursue learning that truly matters. In an information-age, knowledge is plentiful, so knowing the right answer is less important than knowing how to ask the best questions and how to seek a deeper understanding. It91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s less about memorizing facts to write tests, and more about the skills to think critically and creatively, to embrace our humanity and make our world a better place for ourselves and our neighbours. I encourage our graduates to pursue their passions, be creative, be thoughtful, lead with empathy, and show care for others. As they navigate the complexities of the modern world, the ability to adapt, contribute, and connect with others will be their greatest assets.

Graduation represents a significant milestone in an educational journey and graduates have good reason to feel proud of their accomplishments. As they continue life beyond our virtual walls, I encourage each graduate to be curious, be compassionate and to seek new opportunities to learn and grow. On behalf of the entire staff of eSchool23, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to each and every graduate, and I thank them for allowing us to be a part of their educational story.

John Morrone,

Principal of eSchoo23
