Dustin Klassen was diagnosed with a rare bone cancer in 2016.
Conventional treatment for his cancer doesn't work, so the family is seeking alternative therapies. Since their limited income is focused on medicine and treatment, all funds raised will go directly to covering the costs of food, rent and a travel fund to support a possible cure.
The BC Hospital Foundation is matching funds raised via Dustin Klassen's page, 50 cents on the dollar, up to $10,000, for a maximum additional support of $5,000.
Kayla Klassen, Dustin's wife of 11 years and mother to their two young children, has worked in the hospitality industry for the past 17 years, most recently at Bliss Bakery in Peachland.
"When we heard that we were eligible for support, we were ecstatic," Dustin said of the hospital foundation. "I can't believe that the BCHF is going out of its way to help us out. Now I can pay for my medicine and get through the next couple of months without as much worry."
Support from his community has been generous, but the family's fundraising goals have not yet been met.
Along with the GoFundMe page, tickets are available for the Rock the Night Fundraiser for Dustin, taking place New Year's Eve, Dec. 31, from 6:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. at the Days Inn & Conference Centre, 152 Riverside Dr. in Penticton.
For $50 each, the evening will include a dinner from Black Iron Grill, a silent auction, raffles, a 50/50 draw, door prizes and more. Music and comedy entertainment will round out this evening for a great cause.
Get your tickets at the door, or in advance at the Beach Avenue Hair Studio, 5878 Beach Ave. in Peachland.
