The Lake Country Community Fridge is looking for more donations so that it can continue helping neighbours in need.

In October 2021, Jackie Goode, the founder of the free and anonymous food service in Lake Country, opened the fridge after seeing a gap in the resources available to those in need in the community.

The fridge, located outside the Winfield United Church, is stocked by volunteers and generous members of the community with food and essential items.

Goode estimates that each day approximately 15 households access the free resource. She said that unfortunately, due to the high cost of groceries and the constant demand for unimpeded access to food, the fridge is often empty and in need of donations. People can donate and access the food anonymously at any time of the day without needing to fill out any forms or check-in.

91ƵThe fridge is filled regularly and is emptied just as fast.91Ƶ

Recently, a volunteer told Goode that while they were at the fridge for 15 mins, three separate people showed up looking for food.

Goode explained that many of the people who access the fridge are desperate and rely on the resource.

She said that many organizations that offer food are not immediate and require people to register in order to access the service, which can be a barrier for some.

Goode said while the people who donate do not always see the impact that they are having, their kindness has helped to change lives.

Some people who use the fridge have contacted Goode to share the positive impact that it has had on their lives.

91ƵThe community fridge has literally been a godsend to my little family,91Ƶ said one anonymous user of the fridge. 91ƵIt makes life a little easier in the hard times we are going through. Thank you to everyone for the support and kindness to people in the community. It91Ƶs beautiful to see.91Ƶ

People can donate to the fridge by picking up a few extra items at the grocery store and dropping them off at the fridge at any time of the day or night.

The fridge accepts unopened, store bought food including pantry items and produce. Beside the fridge there is a shelf where people can leave non-food essentials like hygiene items and cold weather gear.

91ƵAny donations are helpful,91Ƶ said Goode.

People can also send money by contacting the community fridge on Facebook or by email. Goode said that they are also always looking for more businesses to support and sponsor the altruistic initiative.

Some businesses, like local bakeries provide leftover goods while others donate money on a monthly basis.

The community fridge sponsors and partners include the Winfield United Church, Lake Country Food Bank, Food-It-Forward Okanagan, Okanagan Fruit Tree Project, District of Lake Country, Turtle Bay IT, TD Bank, Starbucks, Cobs Bread, Oyama Sunblush, Valley First Credit Union, Interior Savings Credit Union, Lake Country Radio Cafe, OKGN Market and Valley Pro Recycling.

People can also donate by bringing their cans and bottles to the Lake Country recycling depot and asking for funds to be placed in the community fridge91Ƶs account.

91ƵThe only way we can continue to operate is thanks to the community.91Ƶ
