The Ukrainian Canadian Congress Thompson Okanagan (UCCTO) branch will be outside Save-On Foods at the Village Green Mall on Sunday, Jan. 7 to regale shoppers with Ukrainian koliadky.
Koliadky is a traditional and festive Ukrainian tradition where individuals sing songs based on ancient customs that are meant to bring good luck and prosperity to households that they visit,.
The carolers, often dressed in traditional Ukrainian clothing, will also perform plays or skits that reenact the story of the nativity of Jesus. The melodies are often accompanied by the playing of traditional Ukrainian instruments such as the bandura and sopilka.
Traditional Ukrainian Christmas had been Jan. 7, however, in 2023, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy officially changed the Christmas holiday date to Dec. 25. 2023 was the first time since 1917 that Christmas Day in Ukraine was on Dec. 25.
Canada has become home to more than 200,000 displaced persons from Ukraine who are celebrating Christmas in Canada.
Donations will be accepted to the Canada-Ukraine Foundation for Humanitarian Aid at the Christmas caroling.
The carolers will start their serenading at 1 p.m.
