Rezoning for major housing project moved forward by Lake Country council

Westpoint Projects plans to build up to 640 housing units at Bottom Wood Lake Road

Lake Country council has given further consideration to rezoning changes that will enable a significant residential development at Bottom Wood Lake and Beaver Lake roads.

Westpoint Projects plans to build up to 640 housing units in buildings that will be five to six storeys tall, with underground and surface parking.

Infrastructure improvements will include enhanced crossings for the Okanagan Rail Trail and upgrades at the intersection of Beaver Lake and Bottom Wood Lake roads. Several parks and open spaces are planned for the area.

Currently, some of the properties are located within the City of Kelowna's borders, but a boundary adjustment is in progress to transfer them under Lake Country's jurisdiction.

Recently, Kelowna's council modified the future land use designation for these properties in preparation for the transfer.

The land was previously a BC Tree Fruits storage facility in the 1950s. In 2022, the Okanagan Indian Band, along with Kelowna and Lake Country, signed an agreement aimed at improving infrastructure and safety in the area. The boundary adjustment for these properties is part of that agreement.

Lake Country council gave third reading to the rezoning changes at its Jan. 21 meeting.
