The Walroy Lake wildfire that burned through the Clifton-McKinley neighbourhoods in the summer caused approximately $1.4 million in damage to the Glenmore Landfill.

A staff report to city council noted the fire burned into the landfill on Fri. Aug. 18, damaging about a third of the landfill gas system and also consuming burnt waste piles.

There was limited damage to buildings and equipment.

The estimated costs for supplying and installation of gas wells, pipes, and associated infrastructure are $900,000, while the relocation and placement of the burnt waste is $500,000.

Council approved a request from staff to take $1.4 million from the Reserve for Sanitary Landfill to repair the damages.

A Provincial Disaster Financial Assistance application has been submitted to recover up to 80 per cent of eligible costs.

The landfill remained closed for a week after the fire so hot spots could be extinguished and debris cleared.

It resumed partial operations on Aug. 25 and fully reopened on Sep. 2.
