Mission Creek dangerous this time of year

"A male had been fishing in the creek and was swept away by the strong current, and was in distress..."

Swift action of a kayaker combined with the efforts of the Kelowna Fire Department ensured that that a man who had fallen into Mission Creek lived.

At approximately 5:15 p.m. May 16,  the  that the Kelowna Fire Department responded to a report of a person drowning at the mouth of Mission Creek.

"A male had been fishing in the creek and was swept away by the strong current, and was in distress," read a press release from Scott Cronquist, platoon captain with the Kelowna Fire Department, in a press release.

"A person who was kayaking nearby came to the man91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™s aid and assisted him getting him to a small sand bar. When the Engine arrived they reported that the person was on the sand bar and stood down the Swift Water Rescue Team."

One fire fighter was ferried out to the island by the Kayaker, and put a life jacket on the victim.

"The victim was cold but uninjured," he said. "The kayak was used to transfer the victim to the Marine Rescue Boat. The Marine Rescue boat then took the patient to a dock and awaiting BCAS Crew."

Conquist said this is a good time to remind people that at this time of year with the run off, that Mission Creek can be extremely dangerous and people should stay out of the creek and away from its banks.
