Two B.C. Interior national parks face some of the highest wildfire risk in the country, a Canadian climate analysis firm has reported.
Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks, both located near Revelstoke, have been ranked second and fourth most at risk of wildfires respectively among popular Canadian national parks by AISIX Solutions.
The Vancouver-based software company, specialized in climate risk modelling, based these long-term rankings on historical conditions, 30-year burn probabilities and Shared Socioeconomic Pathway climate scenarios for 2050.
AISIX placed B.C.'s Kootenay and Yoho national parks first and third for wildfire risk, respectively, while Pacific Rim National Park Reserve was ranked ninth.
The highest burn probability is concentrated in Western Canada parks, while Eastern Canada sites such as La Mauricie National Park are projected to see the highest increase in wildfire probability, AISIX said in a statement. Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks saw the third- and fourth-highest increase in wildfire probability overall, respectively.
91裸聊视频淚n this analysis by AISIX, we see increased burn probabilities mainly because of climate change that makes fire seasons last longer with rising temperature and drier fuels,91裸聊视频 Squamish-based climate scientist Gio Roberti said in the statement.
It's important to understand the impact of these evolving wildfire patterns on regions "previously not prone to extreme fire behaviour," AISIX added.
AISIX has yet to include "recent forest disturbances" such as the 2024 fires in Jasper National Park, which is ranked seventh on the list.
"By identifying these high-risk locations, we aim to assist stakeholders in implementing necessary precautions to mitigate the risk of loss of life and property," AISIX's CEO Mihalis Belantis said in the statement.
Mount Revelstoke and Glacier national parks are visited by some 780,000 people each year, according to Parks Canada.
