The town of Princeton has adopted a bylaw adjusting its cemetery fees.

At the Jan. 15 council meeting, council passed the resolution, amending its fees to reflect the current costs for services.

In late November, council expressed a desire for staff to investigate comparable rates for cemetery plots for non-residents at the Princeton Municipal Cemetery, particularly the rates charged in Lower Mainland communities for non-residents.

The first three readings of the bylaw were passed in December.

Under the amendments, burial and cremation plot fees will double for residents. Non-resident fees, which were considerably higher prior to the changes, will also increase.

Other cemetery fees will also be adjusted to fall in line with other cemeteries.

In a report to council, James Graham, director of finance for Princeton, said the cemetery budget is supplemented by municipal taxation funds. Collecting extra funds in lieu of taxpayer-funded support is sound fiscal policy, he said.
