Propane tanks explode during fire at Oliver homeless encampment

The fire was reported on Dec. 1

Firefighters in Oliver rushed to the scene of a blaze at a homeless encampment along a bike trail off Sawmill Road and Walnut Place, Sunday.

The incident was reported just before 11 a.m., Dec. 1.

Fire crews arrived on the scene to find the encampment fully involved with reports of multiple propane tanks exploding.

According to the Oliver Fire Department, crews were able to quickly knock down the fire and remove multiple damaged propane tanks from the scene.

The cause has been determined to have been a heat source that ignited materials within the area, stated the fire department.

The Ministry of Environment was advised of the situation due to the fire's proximity to the river's edge and the amount of debris left behind.

No injuries were reported.
