Salmon Arm's Vienne Bredick struck gold over the weekend at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships.
Bredick, one of 15 U16 athletes chosen to represent B.C. at the Aug. 9-11 event in Calgary, achieved both a personal best and a first-place podium finish in the U16 Women's High Jump category with 1.68 metres (5.5 feet). Amairah Gayle of Toronto came in second place with a jump of 1.64 metres, while third went to Edmonton's Shayla Kaganovsky with 1.60 metres.
Bredick secured a spot as a high jumper on the B.C. team after springing to her previous personal best, 1.67 metres (5.5 feet) at the U16-SR 2024 BC Athletics Provincial Track & Field Jamboree, held July 12-14 in Nanaimo.
Vienne's mother, Luvena, and coach Ian Cameron with Vernon Triple A Track and Field are proud of her accomplishment, though Cameron anticipated Vienne would medal. Though she's only trained with him for a year, Cameron called Vienne a "standout."
"I91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™ve been coaching a bunch of years and I91ÂãÁÄÊÓƵ™ve been B.C. team coach for Legions lots of times and she is very, very good," said Cameron.
