Snowmobiles will take over Vernon's mountain resort from skiers and snowboarders this weekend for the second annual Silver Star Hillclimb.
The three-day event, which begins Friday, will feature both racing sleds and snow bikes taking to the hill to race in the novice to professional levels.
"It's sort of the equivalent of dirt bike racing, but this is more unique in that you don't usually get to see mountain sledders in an environment like this," said Vernon Snowmobile Association president and assistant race director, Ben Drodge. "The hill has been closed down for the event and it's a great opportunity for spectators to see these guys on sleds smashing up a mountain.
"You don't have to be a race enthusiast to enjoy it," he added. "It's also great for people in the industry, and people looking to buy, to see just what's out there in sleds and what people are doing with their snowmobiles."
In addition to providing entertainment for spectators and fun for the riders, Drodge said the purpose of the event is to promote a healthy, clean sport for all ages in a safe environment.
Drodge said the B.C. Avalanche Centre will be on site, providing awareness and offering courses.
Members of Vernon Search and Rescue will be at there to answer any questions, while Vallhalla Helicopters of West Kelowna will have one of their helicopters on site.
A kid's mini-sled race and fireworks will be among the featured events on Friday night.
Race qualifying will be held all day Saturday, with the finals in all divisions set for Sunday.
