A popular bar in downtown Kelowna that prides itself on being a safe space for 2SLGBTQIA+ people was subject to vandalism.

When Friends of Dorothy (FOD) employees arrived at work on Thursday, July 4, they found the pride flag that hung high above the entrance of the lounge had been torn down and discarded in the trash.

"Our flags are displayed proudly up high (like... really, really high)," said FOD, on an I

Because of the effort it would have taken to reach the flag, FOD said they believe it was an "act of intention."

"While things could have been worse, however, this was still incredibly discouraging," said FOD.

In addition to the flag being torn down, the flowers that had been planted in front of the bar had been ripped out and thrown on the ground. FOD said that until now, they have largely avoided vandalism, but not all spaces in Kelowna have avoided hate-filled acts. Last year a

"We don't only see this as an act against our space, but a hurtful act against our community," said FOD.

After posting about the incident on Instagram, the bar received an outpouring of support from hundreds of Kelowna residents and businesses.

Wilbur Turner, the founder of said, "The destruction of a Trans Pride flag in Kelowna is a reminder that there are still acts of hate aimed at silencing and marginalizing trans voices."

Turner encourages allies to stand against "such acts of hate."

It is important that allies use their platforms to speak out against discrimination and use their privilege to be vocal in support of their queer neighbours.

Turner said specifically that "visibility for the trans community is vital."

"When we see diverse representations in our communities, it challenges stereotypes and reduces stigma."

Friends of Dorothy said that they will hold their heads high and will continue to take pride in the community that they stand for.
