Jonathan Derksen took to Facebook asking drivers to 'please slow down' after his wife was recently rear-ended on Highway 33.

Another crash on Highway 33, this time involving his wife, has prompted action from a Joe Rich resident who's seen his fair share of crashes.

On Wednesday, Jan. 15, Jonathan Derksen took to the Highway 33 and Joe Rich Valley News Facebook group to address a couple thoughts. First, he thanked the Joe Rich Fire Department (JRFD) for their quick response to his wife's crash.

"A huge kudos goes out to the JRFD for their INCREDIBLY swift response to an accident at the junction of Three Forks Road and Highway 33. My wife was rear-ended by a vehicle going (apparently) 90km, and all lived to tell the tale. Crazy to watch the jaws of life in action. Thank you also for the thoroughness of the RCMP, KGH ambulance service, and witnesses at the scene," read Derksen's post.

In the comments of the post, Derksen confirmed his wife, Tanya, is okay from the crash but a bit stiff and everyone involved was okay.

Secondly, Derksen has "an earnest request", asking the community to slow down on the stretch of highway just east of Black Mountain.

"We all know there are a few turns off of Highway 33 that need, but don't have, a turning lane. PLEASE SLOW DOWN if a car is indicating left or right, rather than try to pass on the shoulder or make a mad dash around--the life lost could end up being YOURS. I've been first on scene of a couple of horrendous accidents where people lost their lives on this stretch of road--it's dangerous enough as it is," his post continued.

In September 2024, Lindsey Schauerte started a petition on  in an attempt to reduce the speed on Highway 33 near Falcon Ridge and Cardinal Creek.

The request of the petition reads "we propose a reduction in the speed limit and/or the installation of safety measures such as yellow blinking caution lights, large caution signs, or merging lanes for residential areas." It is addressed the the Regional District of Central Okanagan.

As of Jan. 17, 2025, the petition was 322 signatures and has a goal of 500.

According to the ICBC's map tracking crashes in the Southern Interior, there were 40 crashes on Highway 33 from Black Mountain to Big White in 2023. ICBC has not released its 2024 data yet.
